"Chestnuts roasting on an open fire..." (blech!)

Used to sing "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire" happily...until I tasted them...BLECH.

Far be it from me, in this delicate economic moment, to discourage spending sprees at your local chestnut vendor's, but (there's always a "but") I'm just glad I don't have to eat those nasty little things.

Awful roasted...and even worse "glacé"...so popular here.

And the Italians tell you (ad nauseam) that they have such wonderful food.

Then why do they eat these?????

(Believe it, or not...Tony Bennett just came on my radio station singing...yup, you guessed it...I'm haunted by chestnuts! What a voice! http://tonybennett.com/... I'll bet his agent put him up to singing this song....)

I haven't had the "privilege" of even trying them, altho' Jim says he DID get one down one time! Strange how everyone has a different sense of taste...Fran

And what an exorbitant price they sell at too!
However, i've seen people eating ice cream right in the middle of winter as long as the sun is shining brightly so I think it all comes down to a question of, wait for it, 'impression', don't' you?
The chestnuts give that impression of winter: winter warmth all huddled round the fire in a mountain lodge - it's a primitive thing that sophisticated 'townies' like to show off trying to be elegant about it.
As for the taste, well, everyone's entitled to theirs - for you, that huge packet of crisps waiting for you up there on the top shelf would possibly be more inviting ;)
Thanks for your post!

It is funny, isn't it?! It's especially curious when people of the same family, living together under the same circumstances and without particular conditioning, have different tastes. I have wondered about this for years and years, and have no satisfactory answer. I wonder if it might have something to do with our biology. Any biologists out there who can help us with this?

I have never had roasted chestnuts. I'm sorry they're yucky. But they do sound better than pistacios roasting on an open fire.
